Kelsey Montague - (Studio Habit of Mind: Express)

#What Lifts You?
What do you think this question means?  What are things or gestures people in your life might do to lift you up? (some students thought of what fills your bucket or what inspires you)
Kelsey Montague is an International Street Artist.  An International Street artist is exactly what it sounds like. Kelsey is known around the world for art she has created which can be viewed by walking outside or down the street.  The cool thing about street art is that lots of people get to see it.
Kelsey studied art in London and Florence and got a degree in Art & Design.  After college, Kelsey spent 4 years in NYC developing her pen & ink style.  She eventually painted these practiced designs on the side of buildings and large spaces.

She came up with the idea of giving her paintings hashtags.  Hashtags helped to promote her art through photographs on social media, like Instagram and Twitter.  For example, when someone takes a photo in front of one of her large paintings, they can post the photo on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag #whatliftsyou.  Social media helps more people to find and recognize her work, making it popular.

Her art is large and eye catching.   Because of the scale of her work, she uses a ladder or a crane to reach tall areas of her drawings and paintings.  Kelsey uses paint pens or brushes and paint.

Kelsey is interested to see how people interact with her work.
"My murals specifically invite people into a piece and then invite people to share their experience online. I believe that art should not be separated from the human experience. Instead the human experience should have a hand in creating the art itself."
Notice how this person is interacting with the art...even the choice of clothing coordinates or matches the art.
People have asked Kelsey where the designs come from in her illustrations. She says she could give some long answer....but the truth is… I honestly don’t know. I just know that when I start drawing, I completely lose myself in the flow of images.
Patterned wings are signature to Kelsey's art. Her work  is inspirational and asks 'what lifts you?' New designs and motifs like butterflies and balloons are variations of her uplifting work.  Still they ask you the inspirational question #whatliftsyou.  Artists expand their ideas.  What are some other uplifting images Kelsey might consider?  (objects that float, fly, soar, etc.)

Kelsey's work has become so recognizable that major companies have hired her to create murals on their buildings or design t-shirts or mugs for their business to sell.
Kelsey has recently published a coloring book of her work.

Do you have an inspirational message you want to show in your artwork?
How will you make sure people get your message?
What will you EXPRESS with your art?
(will you create a hashtag that will go viral or maybe you will create art large enough to catch people's attention)

We will be making an uplifting set of wings for students and staff to interact with here at Meramec.  Each students will create a feather for our set of wings.
